Did you know that Huntley Meadows Park was once part of George Mason IV's land holdings? Discover this forgotten founding father for yourself by designing your own stencil to mark crops, writing with a quill feather and taking a hike through the land he left us.

Family Woodcock Walk

(Ages 8 to Adult) 5:30-7:00 pm.

Come for an evening walk through the woods to one of the park's large meadows. Listen for the call of the male woodcock and hopefully see his amazing courtship display and flight. Bring a flashlight. Approximately 1.5 mile walk on uneven terrain. Canceled if rain. Children must be accompanied by an adult registered in the program.

Festival of Owls

(Ages 4 to Adult) Noon - 2 pm.

Meet local live owls up close and personal! Learn how these raptors live, hunt, and survive. Touch real owl feathers and bones, dissect owl pellets and make an owl craft. Learn how you can help protect these elusive birds. Optional additional cost to purchase an owl pellet to dissect with the aid of a naturalist. Speakers from Secret Garden Birds and Bees Wildlife Education and Preservation will bring live birds to the program.

The Art of the Book: Bindings

(Ages 12 to Adult) 10 to 11 am.

In honor of Huntley residents who loved both books and art, we offer a set of classes that introduce different aspects of the art of book making. Calligrapher Mary Teichman says that 'calligraphy is a great antidote to modern life.' Explore the art of beautiful writing with a variety of pens and brushes. These classes may be taken alone or in combination.

Corn Grinding & Clay Pottery

(Ages 4 to Adult) noon  to 2 pm.

How did the Powhatan Native Americans use the plants and animals you see every day for their medicine, grocery store, clothing and fun? Immerse yourself in a way of life 400 years ago. Grind corn, make a clay pot, master corn darts and go on a guided tour to see the park from the perspective of a Viriginia Indian.
